曾成功拿下全球x86桌面处理器近3成市占,设计优秀的K8微架构技术性击败龙头Intel,向世人宣示AMD拥有雄厚研发技术实力,足以与对手相抗衡,3年后面对着2006年登场的Intel Core 2处理器,老旧的K8微架构已渐露疲态、无力抵御, AMD只能以价格战捍卫市占,陷入连续四季的严重亏损及股价大幅下滑窘境。
事实上,AMD原本有机会于2007年底前止血、摆脱亏损,但可惜的是,被寄予厚望的K10微架构产品却一再延宕,据台主机板业者表示,由于K10在EVT(工程验证测试阶段)出现多番延误,因此预定第三季末推出Phenom处理器计划已确定告吹,四核心Agena及双核心Kuma预计分别于9月及10进行DVT(设计验证测试阶段),一切顺利将会分别于11月及12月正式量产。
不过,AMD总裁兼首席营运长Dirk Meyer却于甫落幕的AMD 2007技术分析日中坦承,Phenom初期面市的型号只限中低阶,且频率较低,也不会全面大量上市,预期至2008年3-4月,K10才能进一步普及。
在K10新品尚未到位前,AMD仍必须仰赖K8苦守城池,因此,AMD已于7月向各PC业者发布最新重大产品调整计划,其中除Athlon 64 X2 5200+、5600+及6000+等高阶型号的停止下单日期,会由2007年第三季延至2008年第一季外,更重要的是,为避免效能级产品市场出现空缺,8月20日会正式发表频率更高的Athlon 64 X2 6400+,力抗Intel Core 2 Duo E6750及E6850。
根据AMD最新桌面处理器规划,2007年仅有4款Phenom现身,其中11月会先发布1款型号为Phenom FX-80的四核心处理器,锁定高阶玩家市场,核心频率暂定2.2-2.4GHz,512KB L2 x4及2MB L3,最高功耗及售价皆未定。
紧接着12月再推出2款效能级四核心处理器,型号为Phenom x4 GP-7000及GP-7100;GP-7000核心频率暂定2.0-2.2GHz,512KB L2 x4及2MB L3,GP-7100则暂定与FX-80规格相约,仅倍频方面无法向上提升,以利明显区隔玩家与效能级市场,两者最高功耗为89W、售价未定。
双核心处理器方面,AMD预定12月推出1款型号为Phenom x2 GS-6550,核心频率暂定2.0 - 2.4GHz,512KB L2 x2及2MB L3,最高功耗为65W、售价未定。
尽管AMD Phenom可赶及年底前上阵,但仍无法一举化解重重危机,由于只推出针对效能级或以上型号的4款Phenom处理器,加上预计出货比重仅达1成下,事实上,对Intel的处理器销情影响并不大。

值得关注的是,AMD Phenom新核心在频率的提升空间狭隘,为平衡良率表现,首批登场的Phenom核心频率均严重偏低,尽管AMD公开展出核心频率达3GHz的 Phenom X4样本,但能否成功量产备受质疑,加上Intel新一代45奈米处理器「Penryn」及「Nehalem」已整军备战,AMD若要凭借Phenom重拾昔日光辉,短时间内作出微调并赶及上市时程成为现时唯一抗衡计策。
Intel于2007年7月23日投下了震撼弹,频率高达3GHz、每千颗单价仅售266美元的Core 2 Duo E6850正式上市,由于AMD K10一再延宕,令Intel可望在效能级桌面市场独霸山头,与此同时AMD FAB 30捎来好消息,经过制程微调后,K8核心频率终于突破3GHz大关,在K10援军到达前,可望填补效能级市场型号空缺,成功防御Core 2 Duo E6850进逼。
不少超频玩家也发现,AMD K8处理器要超频突破3GHz并非易事,而量产出厂值达3.2GHz的Athlon 64 X2 6400+,倍频16x,核心仍为Windsor,且采90纳米制程,对AMD而言绝对是制程技术的考验,究竟能否真正大量量出货、还是技术宣示意义高于实际的小批量指针性产品,尚待考证。
Athlon 64 X2 6400+
图为AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+处理器样本,OPN编号为ADX60400IAA6CZ,顺序解析AD代表Athlon 64 X2、X代TDP为125W、6400为产品型号、I代表Socket AM2、A代表Variable V_Core、A代表Variable T_Case、6代表2MB L2(1MB x 2)、CZ代表JH-F3 Stepping 。AMD Fab 30出品、出厂日期为2007年第23周。
据主机板业者表示,由于不少主机板并没有预留16x倍频,因此部份主机板产品需要求新BIOS,否则会出现卡在15x倍频,或是被固定在16x倍频而无法自行设定倍频数。
根据AMD通路商表示,现时Athlon 64 X2 6400+官方报价约$220-$240美元,市场定位介于Intel Core 2 Duo E6750、E6850之间,预定8月20日正式上市,为盛重其事,Athlon 64 X2 6400+将会采用全新「Black Edition」包装。
由于AM2+处理器的内存频率是按照核心频率作出除频,因此Athlon 64 X2 6000+在正常情况下,DDR2-800模式仅会以DDR2-750速度运作(CPU/8 x 2),而Athlon 64 X2 6400+则运作于完整的DDR2-800速度,因此在内存测试或是重于内存效能的测试,Athlon 64 X2 6400+将会有较明显的增长。
根据AMD向通路商发布的预定售价,Athlon 64 X2 6400+每千颗单价约为220-240美元,介于Intel Core 2 Duo E6850($266 PKUP)及E6750($183 PKUP)定价之间,故HKEPC编辑部亦找来这两颗处理器作效能对比参照。

尽管AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+核心频率高达3.2GHz,但其效能相较2.66GHz的Core 2 Duo E6750亦有力不从心之感,其除传统强项Sicence Mark 2.0有亮眼表现外,真实游戏测试、Excel Marco宏运算均远落后Core 2 Duo E6750,更遑论欲与Core 2 Duo E6850同场较劲。
不过,Athlon 64 X2 6400+售价若能调降至每千颗单价约$183美元或以下水平,或许还有挑战Core 2 Duo E6850的机会。
另外,不单止在效能上,AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+表现较为逊色外,在处理器功耗及温度表现方面,亦与65奈米、65W TDP的Core 2 Duo E6850有显著差距,看来在K10上阵前,Athlon64 X2 6400+捍卫效能级市场的任务恐怕要失职了。
后记︰
现时AMD 秘密武器Athlon 64 X2 6400+表现,不及Intel Core 2 Duo E6750、E6850已是事实,完全压制Intel效能级产品销售已是不可能任务,反而AMD要担忧的是,在性价比屈居下风劣势下,极有可能成为英特尔抨击焦点,适得其反成为拉抬对手买气的催化剂。因此,与其献丑不如藏拙,专注K10的制程微调,令核心频率得以提升,赶及上市时程才是王道。
曾为AMD拿下全球x86桌面处理器近3成市占的K8架构,面对性能强劲的Intel Core 2处理器已完全显露疲态、无力抵御,尽管进一步拉升频率,也无法弥补效能差距,亦造成功耗大幅增加情况,如同当年Intel Pentium D惨遭Athlon 64 X2打败的翻版,正是前江后浪推前浪,是永恒不变的定律,AMD只有等待K10来临,才能化解陷入连续四季的严重亏损及股价大幅下滑窘境。
